First of all, assalom aleykum everyone 🤗🖐🏻
Today our practice took place at the Magoki Attori mosque. We met with our group at 10:00 and visited to that historical place at the lidership of our group Nigora Kuldasheva.
Our group members Feruza , Malika and Samiya informed us about mosque. Magoki Attori is located the oldest mosque in Bukhara In the centre of Bukhara to the west of the famous Lyabi Hauz square
Its construction in 714 is associated with the name of the Arab Sheikh, Governor of Khorasan, Qutayba Ibn Muslim – one of the first people who brought Islam to the territory of Central Asia. Even before the arrival of the Arabs to Bukhara, a bazaar was located on the site of the mosque, where before the establishment of Islam, Zoroastrian idols, medicinal herbs and spices – attoron – were sold. And in the beginning, this place was called Attoron Bazaar. In the early Middle ages, it was also home to the ancient Mokh Bazaar. In the 1930s, the scientists excavated and found the remains of a carved decoration and foundation of the X century period
The design of the mosque built in the 12th century had little in common with traditional architectural principles which were established only two centuries later. The main decoration of the mosque is close to that of the Samanid Mausoleum – decorative brickworks. Here polished figured bricks are artistically assembled into patterns of scrolls, spirals and meanders. The main entrance has a slightly protruding portal emphasized by an arch on the stone pillars with caps and carvings. The patterned brick surface of the recessed archway niche has a small door. The arch ceiling is decorated with brick terracotta stalactites. The symmetrical half columns attached to the peshtak portal are evidence of pre-Islamic architectural tradition.
In the decoration of the mosque the craftsmen used combinations of bow-shaped bricks, coupled bricks, terracotta bars and glazed tiles as inlays. The vertical panels on the portal bear diagonal inscriptions in Arabic and relief girikh geometric decorative patterns. The variety of ornamental shapes and amazing chiaroscuro of the brickworks on the southern façade of the mosque testify to the great artistic skills of the 12th-century Bukhara architects and craftsmen.
Our teacher Nigora Kuldasheva reported about Magoki Attori mosque. She informed us history of it such rebuild of it, the number of its stairs and etc. Then we listened her and our teacher gave us questions.
